Considered to be a centre of Episcopal irradiation, and one of the most important Romanesque temples in Portugal, the history of Braga’s Cathedral dates back to the work of its first bishop, D. Pedro de Braga (1070), that conceived a pilgrimage project somehow similar to the Santiago de Compostela and to other French pilgrimage churches, with three naves, salient transept, high altar and deambulatory.

In this Cathedral can be found the tombs of Henry of Borgone and his wife, Teresa de Leão, the Counts of the Portucalense County, the parents of the first Portuguese King: D. Afonso Henriques.
