The Serra Malcata’s Natural Reserve is situated in the Central Region of the country, in between the departments of Sabugal and Penamacor, in an area of about 20 km2, with the highest point at about 1075 meters high.

The headquarters of this Reserve is situated in Penamacor, with another comission in Sabugal.

This Reserve is situated next to the border with Spain, and its primary goal was aiming for the preservation and conservation of the Iberian Lynx, a critically endangered feline mammal native of this region, and also the symbol of the Reserve.

Many other Fauna species inhabit the region, like the fox, the boar, the wildcat, the beech marten or the famous Iberian wolf, or other species such as the also endangered black stork, the rat snake, the chelidae, among many other.

In what concerns to the Flora species, this is an area of Mediterranean woods, where one can find holm-oak trees, rock-roses, oak trees, ash and willow tress, hazelnut trees, chest nut and cork oat trees, and more recently, pine trees and eucalyptus.

The landscape is gorgeous, fine for pedestrian walks, having the Reserve its own itinerary suggestions, as well as the offer of activities such as mountain bikes or canoeing.
