Quelfes Roman Bridge

Also known as “Ponte Velha” (Old Bridge) this is a bridge of Roman origin, constructed in the Ist century a.C, yet with several restoration and reconstruction works afterwards, considered to be one of the most important road structures of the Roman occupation period that has survived until these days in the Algarve eastern territory.
Its structure is fairly modest, supposably a passing bridge in a secondary road for the connection to agricultural and private Villas.
In the 18th of June 1808, in the immediacies of this bridge, the troops of Napoleon were defeated, being this a point of uprising of all the Algarve region.
The Quelfes Roman Bridge has suffered works of restoration, in 2005.
