Marqueses de Fronteira Palace

The Palace was built in 1640 for the first Fronteira Marquis, D. João de Mascarenhas, hero in the Portuguese Restoration War. The Palace is situated right next to the Monsanto Park and the Largo São Domingos de Benfica, in Lisboa’s city centre.
The Palace suffered some restoration and enlargement works during the 18th century, in a Rocaille architectural style, and nowadays still is the residence of the 12th Fronteira Marquis, although some rooms, the beautiful library and the gardens are possible to visit.

The Palace is quite famous for its many gorgeous glazed tiles, with a great variety of designs and themes, and for its majestic garden with about 5,5 hectares: the Fronteira Palace is an oasis in the middle of Lisboa.

The interior of the Palace is equally rich and elegant, with its highlight in the “Sala das Batalhas”, that possesses great panels and glazed tiles with some Restoration War scenes, with three big windows that open to the lovely Venus Garden, and also the Dinning Room, with several frescos with pictures of the Portuguese Nobility.

The Chapel, dating from the end of the 16th century, has a nativity scene that was probably made by one of the considered to be finest Portuguese artists of all times: Machado de Castro.

The sumptuous Italian-style Gardens visits start in the Chapel terrace, and are more than worth the visit, specially the fantastic Venus Garden (“Jardim de Vénus”) and the Formal Garden (“Jardim Formal”) from the 17th century where is situated the wonderful “Galeria dos Reis” (Kings Gallery).
