This National Monument is situated on the gorgeous Sousa river valley, in Cete, on the lovely Paredes department, in the Northern region of Portugal, integrating the touristic-cultural Vale do Sousa Romanesque Route.
The São Pedro de Cete Church was part of the conventual set of the ancient Cete monastery, that suffered several alterations and conservation works during the 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th centuries.
It is thought that the foundation of the Monastery might date back to the 10th and 11th centuries, by the Benedictine Religious Order.
One of the most famous elements of the Church is its wide ogival portal with four archivolts and with a lovely rose window in the top.
Another quite interesting element is the battlement tower, that served not only as a religious and spiritual asset, but also military, which was quite important during the troubled periods of the Middle Ages.
For many time abandoned, and in need of great conservation works, much of this National Monument got forever lost. Nowadays one can visit the Church, the Chapter Room and the pre-Manueline Cloister.
