Cacela was an important center during the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, withal archaeological researches sustain previous human occupation (probably Roman) in this area. In the 16th century this fortification was reconstructed with conservation and restoration works that were prolonged until the end of this century. In 1755 the big earthquake caused great damage in this structure. The current fortification was raised over the old castle in the end of the 18th century. The Cacela Velha Fortress is classified as Monument of Public Interest and has been benefiting from conservation works.
