Located in the Centre of Portugal, by the Mondego river bank, Figueira da Foz is a Coastal city, with an old and rich history, culture and traditions, the second largest in the Coimbra District.
Considered to be the “Queen of the Silver Coast” for its extensive sandy beaches, Figueira da Foz has in Tourism one of its main industries, being inclusively one of the main tourist centre of the country, also providing one of the biggest Casinos in Portugal.
Figueira da Foz is surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges with rich vegetation, ocean, river: astonishing natural landscapes that provide to this city a natural charm.

With human occupation vestiges since remote epochs, Figueira da Foz had a huge development during the 18th and 19th centuries due to the immense Port movements and the expansion of the Shipbuilding industry, supplying the city with new communication routes, housing and other facilities, and the discovery of the city by several Summer visitors. In the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, new structures were built and are still presented nowadays, with a vintage lovely look, such as several Hotels, the Casino, Restaurants and the area in the centre where shops and commerce are located.
It was in Figueira da Foz that, in the beginning of the 19th century that the English Troops disembarked, allied to the Portuguese troops that fought the French Invasions.

Figueira da Foz presents a quite interesting monument heritage, with several Churches, many of them in the rich Baroque style, an interesting Municipal Museum with archaeological, ethnographic and artistic collection, the Santa Catarina Fort and Buarcos Fortress, the Relógio Tower, several archaeological vestiges throughout the municipality, several Palaces and Manor Houses (like the gorgeous Sotto-Mayor Palace), the lovely Marina and pleasant several green spaces and small gardens.
