Mogadouro has been a territory occupied by Men since pre-historical times, receiving Roman influence and afterwards dominated by Visigoths, until the Moorish conquest.

With the Christian re-conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, this region gets into Portuguese domain by the hand of the first Portuguese king: D. Afonso Henriques. The king offers this domains to the Templar Order around the year 1145.

The Castle’s construction was probably made around 1160 and already in 1297, during the reign of king D. Dinis, the defensive structures wee reinforced.

This Castle played important roles since the 15th century, namely during the Portuguese Independence Restoration War in the 17th century.

The Castle was since the 15th century property of the Távoras family, which was accused of treason during the reign of king D. José I (1750 to 1777), leading to the abandonment of the Castle and to its destruction.

Classified as a National Monument, the Mogadouro Castle received some conservation works and nowadays can be seen to pieces of the defensive walls, the donjon and the clock tower.
