
The Santa Maria’s Island Airport was the first to be built in the entire Azores Archipelago and its nine islands, still in the context of the Second Great War and by north American troops, such was the importance of its strategic location in the vast Atlantic Ocean. The Airport was inaugurated in 1945.
Situated next to main village of the Island, Vila do Porto, the Airport assures the regular flights connecting to Lisboa and Ponta Delgada.
This is the Airport with the most extensive runway in the Archipelago, with 3.048 meters long, as well as two other runway, and presenting other passenger assistance services, as well as shops, restaurants and cafeteria services.
