Abrantes

Abrantes is a lovely town situated in the Central region of the country, on a slope over the wide Tejo river, with a rich history and heritage to present to all visitors.

The origins of the settlement are lost in time, being conquered to the Moors by the First king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques that in 1173 donated the territory to the Order of Santiago.
Because of its strategic location over the Tejo river, Abrantes had a great military importance, mainly in the Christian Re-conquest epoch and during the French Invasions, as still nowadays the town’s Castle tells us.
This great location also made of Abrantes an important Fluvial Port in the traditional trading, estimated to reach the country’s capital, Lisboa, right up until the 1970‘s.

Abrante’s historical centre is constituted by lovely ancient houses, with flowered streets, being even called as the most flowered town in Portugal. A visit to its lovely heritage is worth, with places like the charming Castle, or the Santa Maria do Castelo (15th century), São Vicente, São Baptista and Misericórdia Churches, as well as the Casa dos Almadas Manor House (once a Royal Palace) and the delightful Casa da Câmara.

Abrantes also presents interest museums like the D. Lopo de Almeida museum, situated in the Santa Maria do Castelo Church, and the Ecological Museum of Martinchel, only a few meters away from the wonderful Castelo de Bode Dam, and also the Municipal Art Gallery with several temporary exhibitions.

Every May, during the Abrantes Festivities, the town organizes the “Flowered Streets Contest”, and all the streets are adorned with colour and vivacity, adding even more beauty to all the locality.

Abrantes is very famous for its pastry, with regional sweets quite appreciated throughout the country, mainly based in eggs and sugar, like the “Tigeladas” and the “Palha de Abrantes”.
